Madelaine’s Story
"Winning the Animal Care and Management Apprentice of the Year award was an incredible honour, but the real highlight has been the journey that got me here."
Madelaine Dunlop joined Capel Manor College’s Level 3 Keeper and Aquarist Apprenticeship through a partnership with ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, pursuing her dream of becoming a zookeeper.
“I’ve always been fascinated by animals and conservation, so when I came across the apprenticeship at Capel Manor College, it felt like the perfect fit. The course combines in-depth learning with practical, hands-on experience, which has been invaluable. Every day is an opportunity to make a difference, and I love applying what I’ve learned to real-world challenges.”
Madelaine excelled throughout her apprenticeship, achieving distinctions in her exams, including an outstanding 96% on a multiple-choice test. She also completed an innovative research project exploring how different light colours can reduce stress in deer. This project not only earned her academic recognition but also made a tangible impact on animal husbandry practices at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo and beyond.
“I was so proud to see my research have a real-world effect. It’s one thing to learn theory in a classroom, but being able to apply that knowledge and see it improve animal welfare was incredibly rewarding.”
Madelaine’s dedication and achievements led her tutor to nominate her for the Animal Care and Management Apprentice of the Year award. The rigorous process included a glowing reference from her employer and an interview with a panel of experts from Lantra.
“I was thrilled just to be nominated, so hearing my name called as the winner was surreal. The awards night was buzzing with energy, and meeting so many incredible people from across the industry was inspiring. Seeing my tutor, Lauren, and getting the chance to thank her for her support was another special moment.”
Now a full-time zookeeper at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, Madelaine is focused on developing her skills and continuing to make an impact in animal care and conservation.
“What’s next? I want to keep learning and becoming the best keeper I can be. Every day I get to work with amazing animals and contribute to their welfare, which is a privilege. My time at Capel Manor College gave me the tools and confidence to succeed, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.”
Madelaine’s advice for future students:
“Embrace every opportunity and don’t be afraid to ask questions. The practical experience and knowledge you gain will set you up for an exciting career, and if you’re passionate about animals, there’s no better place to start than Capel Manor College!”
