Course overview
The Horticulture Technical Diploma (Level 2) is a BTEC qualification in horticulture that has been designed to provide you with a solid foundation in the principles and practices of horticulture and gardening.
Aimed at school leavers, this course provides a strong starting point for your entry into one of the UK’s most vital and rewarding industries. The course offers a practical, hands-on approach to developing the essential skills, knowledge and understanding needed to begin a successful career in horticulture.
Throughout the course, you will explore a wide range of topics including plant identification and care, soil science, pest and disease control and the maintenance of outdoor spaces. This horticulture course combines classroom learning with real-world experience, helping you build the confidence and competence required for the workplace.
You will learn
- Plant identification and classification
- Soil science and growing media, including how to prepare growing environments for healthy plant growth
- Plant health and pest management
- Propagation techniques including sowing seeds, taking cuttings and division
- Establishment and maintenance of plants in various settings
- How to use and maintain tools and machinery
- Working safely in horticulture including health and safety practices, risk assessments and safe working practices
- How to apply sustainability and environmental awareness in the industry

You will need at least four GCSEs at grade 3 and above (D and above), or successful completion of an equivalent Level 1 qualification. Relevant prior learning or experience gained in an appropriate professional environment will be considered.
Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to one of our Level 3 horticulture or garden design courses. You will also be able to gain employment at assistant level in the gardening and landscaping industry, opportunities include: working overseas, landscaping, turf management, parks and gardens, community gardens, garden retail or you could even start your own business.
This is a full-time course. If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 at the start of this course, your tuition, exams and materials fees will be paid for you in full as long as you meet some basic criteria for UK residence. Further information will be provided when you enrol.
If you are aged 19 or over on the day your course starts, you may be entitled to help with tuition fees for some courses. If you are in receipt of employment benefits, have a low income, or are studying towards your first substantial qualification, you may be entitled to free tuition.
