Introduction to Drawing and Painting the Gardens

Course overview

This two-week workshop will begin with an inspiring image-illustrated Art History lecture, looking at the artworks and different palettes of various Old Masters and trailblazing Contemporary Artists including Monet, Matisse, Constable, Hockney, Kandinsky, Caillebotte, Sorolla, Ruisdael, Hilma af Klint and Henry Moore.

You will then complete a practical drawing and painting session on site in the garden grounds. We will help you learn how to use your sketchbook and your smartphone for photography shots and video reels, to inspire you when you are back in the studio creating a landscape image. We will also focus, challenge, boost and expand your mindset and confidence as you navigate, draw and paint the engaging landscape.

All materials and equipment will be provided for use.

You will learn

  • Colour in nature to mix the best greens, avoiding ‘muddy’ mixes
  • Tonal value strategies ’Skying’ painting clouds
  • How to use thumbnail sketches
  • How to select the best landscape composition design
  • Mark-making, stumbling and feathering brush strokes
  • Palette knife daubing
  • How to encompass movement, depth, space, line rhythms, focal point(s), texture, experimental collage and abstraction

Although there is no formal qualification associated with this course, all participants will receive a Capel Manor College Certificate of Attendance upon completion.

You must be aged 19 or over to apply for this workshop and have an interest in art history, drawing and painting.

Upon completion of this workshop, you can progress onto other art and design workshops to expand your skills. You can also apply for an accredited UAL Art and Design qualification.

Government funding is not available for this course; you will need to pay for your tuition. The fee shown for each campus and course start date is the total fee that you will need to pay.

For some of our courses, we offer a discount for current students. If this is the case, you will see the reduced fee when you select your chosen course campus and start date. To qualify for this discount, you must already be studying another course at Capel Manor College, and be adding this course to your existing programme.
