Aisha’s animal management journey
When Aisha first considered her future, her plan was simple: complete her English and maths GCSEs and find a part-time job. Fast forward a few years and she is now thriving on the Animal Care Technical Diploma (Level 2) here at Capel Manor College, with ambitions to progress to Level 3 and eventually become a zookeeper.
Aisha joined Capel Manor College after researching options online with her mum. Although she had always loved horses and initially considered studying equine care, she decided that animal management would give her broader career opportunities in the future.
“I realised that if I only studied horses, I’d only have an equine qualification. With animal care, there are so many more options,” she explains.
She began her journey at the College’s Gunnersbury Park Campus. Alongside her studies, Aisha has taken on the role of Student Ambassador, welcoming visitors at Open Events and guiding them around campus to help them feel at ease.
“It’s nice and relaxed here,” she says. “Gunnersbury Park Campus isn’t big and fancy, but it’s soothing and there’s lots of greenery. That really helps.”
Learning through practical experience
Like many animal management students, Aisha particularly enjoys the hands-on side of the course.
“I prefer the practical activities because that’s how I understand things better,” she says. “Level 2 involves a lot of writing and theory as well, which is important for exams – even if taking lots of notes isn’t my favourite part!”
The balance of practical learning and classroom study has helped Aisha develop both her subject knowledge and important workplace skills. She highlights teamwork and learning to ask for help as two of the most valuable lessons she has gained so far.
“Working together and making sure everyone’s involved is important for the animal industry. I’ve also learned that it’s okay to ask for help, that’s definitely something I’ve improved on.”
Advice for future students
Aisha’s advice for anyone considering studying at Capel Manor College, or pursuing a career in the animal industry, is heartfelt and inspiring:
“Don’t let others hold you back. Not a lot of people work in the animal industry, so you might feel small if your friends are doing medicine or working in offices. You might think their jobs are bigger or more important but what you’re doing matters too! You’re making a difference. Everyone is unique and has their own story. Don’t give up on what you love because of what others think.”
With her growing confidence, determination and passion for animals, Aisha is already well on her way to achieving her goals. We look forward to seeing where her journey takes her next!
