Ellie’s agriculture journey
When Ellie first discovered Capel Manor College through Instagram she had no idea it would lead her to completely change direction and find a career path that truly excited her.
Originally studying marketing at another college, Ellie had been working on farms for several years when she began her studies. She missed the practical side of farm life and realised that a future in marketing wouldn’t allow her to continue working with animals, something she knew she didn’t want to give up.
“As soon as I saw the agriculture courses advertised, I was interested,” Ellie explains. “When I came for my interview and saw the campus grounds and all the animals, I got really excited. I knew this was definitely the place for me.”
A lifelong passion for animals
Ellie’s journey into agriculture began at a young age. With cousins who owned horses, she spent much of her time at local stables. She later completed her school work experience at a veterinary practice, strengthening her desire to work closely with animals.
Whilst still at school Ellie secured a job at a farm in Hertford, and she’s still there today. Her experience there helped her realise that she wanted to focus specifically on farm animals, rather than the cats and dogs typically seen in veterinary surgeries.
Now studying our Agriculture (Farm Management) Advanced Diploma, Ellie has been at Capel Manor College for two years and has grown both personally and professionally. One of the biggest turning points in her journey has been recognising how her previous marketing studies could complement her agricultural knowledge.
“I’ve realised I could combine the skills I developed on my marketing course with what I’ve learnt in agriculture and potentially work in marketing within the agricultural industry.”
The course has also encouraged Ellie to step outside her comfort zone. With support from her tutors, she has undertaken work experience beyond the farm she had worked at for four years. This has broadened her experience and introduced her to working with animals she had never encountered before.
Her proudest achievement so far?
Being offered ongoing work at a dairy farm where she initially volunteered as part of her work experience.
Learning beyond the classroom
While Ellie loves the practical elements of the course and working closely with animals, she has developed a strong appreciation for the theory too.
“Seeing how the theory improves the way I work has made me realise how important it is.”
She also highlights the importance of networking, a skill she believes is essential for anyone hoping to progress within the land-based industries.
“Building your knowledge is important, but without the right connections it’s hard to know where to take those skills.”
Next steps
Since joining Capel Manor College Ellie has become more confident, thanks in part to the supportive and social environment.
“I’ve met lots of people with similar interests, which has been great. It’s clear the tutors really want us to succeed.”
Over the next year, Ellie will take on a new role as a practical instructor at the College, an exciting step that reflects how far she has come. Long term, she hopes to combine her passion for animals with opportunities in either agriculture or the veterinary sector.
Ellie’s advice to fellow students
“Just go for it. Whatever you’re interested in, take the plunge and give it your all. Even if you don’t end up pursuing that career, you’ll enjoy studying something you love.”
Ellie’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to change direction and that following your passion can open doors you never expected.
