Ellie’s animal management journey

Finding purpose, confidence and new friends while studying animal management.

When Ellie first joined Capel Manor College to study animal management, she had no idea how much the experience would change her life, both personally and professionally.

Now studying for her Level 2 Diploma, after successfully completing her Level 1 course, Ellie is thriving and hopes to progress to Level 3. “I’ve always known I wanted to work with animals,” Ellie shared. “Between school and college, I took a year out to focus on my mental health, but I really wish I’d come straight to Capel Manor College. It’s given me a sense of purpose and direction. Working and interacting with the animals every day has been such a motivator and keeps me positive.”

Ellie says the support from staff has made a huge difference to her journey. “My mentor Jeremy has been amazing; he’s probably the best mentor I’ve ever had. And Amber has been supportive from my very first day here.”

She’s also gained lifelong friends and newfound confidence. “Making friends is something I’ve struggled with in the past, but the environment here helped me open and connect with people. It’s a welcoming mix of different ages, and I love being able to support younger students who are going through things I once faced myself.”

Ellie has come a long way since she first joined. “When I started, I didn’t really talk to anyone. Now I can chat to everyone! I’ve learned how to manage my emotions, communicate better and ask for help when I need it. The staff here know when to support me and when to give me space to work independently – it’s a perfect balance.”

Her proudest achievement so far has been being offered a voluntary role at her work experience placement. “I felt so proud that they wanted to keep me on, it showed me how much progress I’ve made.”

As a student representative, Ellie now uses her confidence and experience to help others. “My advice to new students would be to believe in yourself. You can achieve whatever you put your mind to if you make a plan and go for it.”

Looking ahead, Ellie hopes to volunteer abroad and eventually become an animal keeper, or to perhaps even work at Crystal Palace Park Farm, where she studies. “Capel Manor College has given me the skills, confidence and hands-on experience to make my dream career possible.”

Where are they now?

After five years studying animal management with us, Cara has continued to thrive in higher education and the animal science sector.

Following her time at our College she progressed to her first-choice university to study BSc (Hons) Zoo Biology, a course selected to broaden the biology and animal science knowledge she first developed at Capel Manor College. Throughout her degree, Cara explored diverse areas from physiology to animal behaviour, and the fascinating crossover of behavioural physiology.

As part of her four-year programme, Cara completed an exciting placement year that took her around the world. She spent three months at a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Ecuador followed by six months at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna contributing to sector research.

Returning to the UK for her final year, Cara graduated with first-class honours, as well as several prestigious awards recognising her academic excellence and dedication to student leadership.

Her success has continued beyond her undergraduate degree. Cara has now been accepted to study an MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour at one of the UK’s leading institutions in this field. Alongside her postgraduate studies, she is working remotely with her research team in Vienna, conducting data analysis and contributing to multiple scientific publications.

Cara says that Capel Manor College helped shape the confident, motivated person she is today, supporting her personal development as much as her academic journey. Her long-term dream remains to work in animal behaviour and eventually become a team leader in a canine behavioural team with a charity such as Dogs Trust, RSPCA or Battersea, before moving on to a career in education, inspiring others just as she was inspired.
