Beatrice’s Story

Growing in confidence: Beatrice’s animal management journey

From a young age, Beatrice knew she wanted to work with animals. When her school’s careers adviser recommended Capel Manor College, it felt like the perfect next step. “I’ve always known I wanted to work with animals,” Beatrice explained. “My careers adviser suggested Capel Manor College, and it’s turned out to be the best choice for me.”

Beatrice began her studies on the Animal Care Technical Diploma (Level 2), before progressing to Level 3. Her journey has been one of steady growth, increasing independence and confidence. “When I first started at the College, I needed a lot of support,” she said. “Now, I work very independently. The course has helped me gain so much confidence in my abilities, and I feel it’s setting me up well for university.”

Beatrice hopes to go on to study zoology at university and eventually work in conservation or in a zoo. “The way the course gradually becomes more theory-based has really helped me prepare for the next step,” she added. She’s particularly enjoyed how interactive and practical her studies have been. “The tutors and teaching assistants are amazing – they keep lessons engaging and always push you to be more independent. The course is fun, hands-on and full of opportunities to learn.”

One of Beatrice’s proudest achievements so far has been gaining a Distinction and successfully progressing to Level 3. She also had the opportunity to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime college trip to South Africa in July, where she gained first-hand experience of working with wildlife.

Beatrice’s advice for students with EHCPs:

“Be confident and don’t be afraid to ask questions – that’s how you learn! Ask for support when you need it, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Enjoy your studies, have fun, and try your best. You’ll gain confidence here just like I did.”
