Saddlery and Leatherwork

Saddlery is one of the country’s oldest industries, dating back to the time when people started to domesticate and keep horses.

Today there is great demand for high quality hand-made leather saddles, tack and other leather goods.

We offer the prestigious and historic Worshipful Company of Cordwainers’ Diploma in Saddle, Harness and Bridle Making. The course is supported by the Worshipful Livery Companies of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers, Cordwainers, Curriers, Loriners, Saddlers and approved by The Society of Master Saddlers who are committed to keeping the tradition of hand-sewn leatherwork alive.

Capel is the only college in the country to run a full-time saddlery course where you can learn the traditional English saddlery skills making handcrafted saddles, bridles, harnesses and other leather accessories.

This is the ideal choice if you are interested in horses, horse riding and working with leather, have artistic flair and a good business sense.

Our students enter the industry working for saddlery businesses and Master Saddlers, some take up Apprenticeships to further their training. The traditional saddlery skills learnt on the course are transferable and our students go on to work with a wide range of employers: luxury case and leather goods makers, Globe Trotters and Simpson London; British Army; Royal Mews; the fashion industry designing and creating leather goods; repairs and restoration and making costumes for historical re-enactments.
