Your Path to a Greener Career at Capel Manor College

As the world turns its focus to sustainability and conservation, there is no better time to explore a career that is both fulfilling and environmentally responsible. Green Careers Week (GCW) takes place from the 6 to 11 November 2023, and at Capel Manor College, we offer a wide variety of courses consciously designed for our changing planet.

Capel Manor College has been a leading institution in the fields of horticulture, animal care, and environmental conservation for decades. Our mission is to provide students with the knowledge and practical skills required to address the challenges our world faces today, such as climate change, habitat loss, and the need for sustainable agriculture.

For Green Careers Week, we invite you to explore the various opportunities that Capel Manor College offers:

Agriculture: Agriculture is the single largest employer in the world, providing over 4.1 million jobs in the UK alone. Cultivate plants, care for livestock, and learn what it means to be a custodian of British countryside and wildlife. You will study a multitude of topics, whilst gaining first-hand farming experience working at our certified organic Forty Hall Farm, as well as at Mudchute Farm, developing the practical skills and knowledge for progression to higher education or to start your career in the agriculture industry.

Animal management: If you are an animal lover, our animal care courses will help you become a qualified professional in the field. There are over 13,000 businesses in the animal care sector covering everything from zookeeping and farming to pet grooming and cattery management. Explore your passion for animals with our specialist courses in animal management, zoology, veterinary science and dog grooming. We offer a range of nationally and internationally recognised animal management courses, ranging from further to higher education.

Arboriculture and forestry: Master the art and science of tree care and management. Arborists are in high demand as communities value their green spaces more than ever. The trees and timber industry contributes £268 million to the UK economy. Our full, part-time and apprenticeship courses open up numerous educational and career opportunities; many of our students progress to higher education to further their studies or enter careers within the industry. After obtaining your qualifications, you can go on to work overseas, especially where there is extensive timber production in countries such as New Zealand and Canada.

Business and digital skills: Sustainability in a working environment requires us to use resources to ensure minimum impact on our planet. Our courses are designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of how businesses operate, offering not only financial benefits but also valuable transferable skills. More and more employers in the business sector are using sustainable practices in the workplace. You will explore how non-sustainable practices can affect these workplaces and explore ways in which a business sector workplace could improve with environmentally conscious practices.

Floristry and event styling: The floristry industry contributes more than £1.5 billion to the UK economy every year whilst the event industry contributes more than £42 billion. Our courses, with the exception of our workshops, will give you the opportunity to gain nationally and internationally recognised qualifications with the prospect of progressing to further study, higher education, employment, or starting your own business. We have an in-house retail training facility at our Enfield Campus and we regularly participate in exciting, high-profile national competitions, such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. You will be encouraged to take advantage of these unique opportunities, where you can gain valuable work experience.

Garden and landscape design: We have a long-established reputation for delivering courses of the highest quality with a core focus on today’s challenges of climate change, sustainability, and health and wellbeing. You will be encouraged to showcase your skills by entering your work into nationally and internationally renowned design shows, exhibitions and competitions. We work with industry experts, such as the Society of Garden Designers and The Landscape Institute to ensure our courses provide essential industry knowledge, skills and expertise.

Horticulture and professional landscaping: Horticulture is one of the largest industries in the UK, contributing £9 billion to the UK economy every year. Developing your knowledge and skills may also give you the opportunity to get involved in the design and implementation of gardens for a variety of national horticulture shows, as well as the regeneration and redevelopment of parks and gardens in our local communities. Students regularly win awards in RHS shows such as Chelsea, Hampton Court and Chatsworth. Our courses are designed to turn your passion for plants and landscapes into a lifelong career.

Wildlife and environmental conservation: The UK’s government works with over 30 public bodies and agencies that specialise in protecting the country’s environment. In a world where environmental stewardship is paramount, our courses focus on creating a greener future. You will learn the specialist knowledge required along with gaining the extensive hands-on field experience needed to manage habitats, conserve wildlife and the environment. After completing a Level 3 course, you will be equipped to progress to higher education, undertake an industry training course, or work in the UK or internationally within conservation. From sustainable land management to environmental policy, we have the expertise to guide you.

Land-based industry training: If you are technically inclined, explore our courses in land-based engineering, where you’ll learn how to maintain and operate the machinery that keeps our countryside functioning. These courses are designed to provide you or your employees with specialist training and skills to bring them in line with rigorous industry standards. All of our courses are run by qualified instructors, most of whom are members of the LANTRA professional register.
