Floristry student at Capel Manor College deck the halls for the Radio Times Covers Party at Claridges Hotel, London
Initiated by our very own florist, Louise Quigley, each year our students step through the doors of the iconic Claridges Hotel in London to create breath-taking floral displays that bring the venue to life. A fantastic way to kick-start the year, our floristry students travel to central London each January to take part in the prestigious Radio Times Covers Party. In just a few short hours, what takes weeks of meticulous planning - from design concepts to sourcing sundries, foliage and flowers – culminates in a stunning showcase of skill and creativity as the hotel is transformed.
This annual event is not only an exciting experience but also a rare and invaluable industry opportunity. Students gain hands-on experience in floral arrangement while navigating the fast-paced world of event planning. Working alongside multiple trades on-site, they develop essential skills in teamwork, time management and adaptability – critical attributes for a career in floristry and event styling.
Behind the Scenes: From Concept to Creation
The students’ work is made possible through careful planning and coordination. Sarah Collins, Florist and Retail Coordinator for Events and Commercial Operations, works closely with the client to develop a creative brief and source materials within budget.
“This year, the brief was different, requiring a large floral arch at the entrance instead of the usual urn arrangements,” Sarah explains. “A lot of time was spent researching and sourcing the right vases, sundries and flowers and liaising with wholesalers to get the best prices while staying within budget.” Sarah adds: “What our students bring to my designs is truly inspiring, and watching them bring these designs to life in such a prestigious setting is always a proud moment It’s a real test of their creativity, technical ability and problem-solving skills, and they always rise to the challenge. Seeing their hard work and dedication on display at such a high-profile event is incredibly rewarding.”
