Capel Manor College is thrilled to be participating in the upcoming BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair for the first time. Set to take place from 3 to 5 May 2024 in Beaulieu, Hampshire, this event promises a spectacular display of horticultural excellence and innovation.

This year’s competition theme is “Gardening in a Challenging Climate,” and is guided by the renowned garden designer Cherry Carmen. Each competing college will showcase a budget-friendly garden design that addresses the pressing issue of climate change.

Capel Manor College’s project team, led by students currently studying the Professional Gardener Diploma, will spearhead the creation of an environmentally conscious garden called ‘Come Rain or Shine’ that incorporates sustainable practices and creative solutions. Inspired by nature-based solutions, the garden will tackle climate change issues such as sustainable urban drainage, heat and water management, and plant selection for tough conditions.

Sian, a member of the project team, shared her excitement, stating, “The show presents an opportunity for visitors to gather inspiration for their own gardens. Our show garden, emphasising climate change adaptation, showcases the transformation of a flood-prone corner into a biodiverse oasis using reclaimed materials. This project integrates classroom knowledge with practical gardening skills, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability. It has been an invaluable experience, boosting our confidence to tackle larger projects in the future.”

With generous support from BBC Gardeners’ World, Capel Manor College has received a £3,000 donation, matched by a contribution from the College itself. Materials for the project have been graciously donated by sponsors Kebur Landscapes and RoLawn, further emphasising the collaborative spirit of the event.

The project plan outlines six sessions dedicated to design, sourcing, and mock-up build within the spring term. Capel Manor College’s dedicated team of students has expressed their commitment to going above and beyond, with many offering to work extra days during the project timeframe and actively participating in the build, show and breakdown stages.

Following the competition, Capel Manor College aims to repurpose and reinstall the garden within its grounds, reinforcing the values of reuse, recycle, and reinvest. Capel Manor College’s Enfield Campus is the preferred location for installation, ensuring the garden’s legacy lives on beyond the Spring Fair.
