Capel Manor College Showcases Student Success at Hertfordshire County Show
Capel Manor College returned to the Hertfordshire County Show on 29 and 30 May 2026, where students demonstrated their skills and expertise through participation in the livestock competitions and at the College's exhibition stand.
Students and staff from the animal management and agriculture departments supported Agriculture Lecturer Mark Ballard in exhibiting his rare breed sheep from the Mernagh Flock, including Castlemilk Moorit and Hebridean sheep.
The students achieved excellent results in the Young Handler competitions, taking home second, third and fourth place rosettes. The sheep also enjoyed considerable success in the breed classes, winning numerous awards, including Reserve Male Champion at both days of the show.
Mark Ballard, Agriculture Lecturer, said:
“Our students performed exceptionally well and gained a wide range of practical skills and knowledge throughout the show. They had the opportunity to see a variety of livestock breeds, develop their understanding of breed standards, and experience first-hand what it takes to prepare and present animals in a competitive environment.”
In addition to competing, students spoke with breeders and industry professionals, expanding their knowledge of the sector and building valuable connections. They also supported farmers from Mudchute Farm in showing their sheep, further developing their practical handling and teamwork skills.
Experiences such as the Hertfordshire County Show provide invaluable opportunities for Capel Manor College students to immerse themselves in the agricultural industry, apply their learning in a real-world setting, and gain the confidence and experience needed for their future careers.
