Capel Manor College Hosts Inaugural Arborist Employer Conference
At the start of the academic year, Capel Manor College hosted its first-ever Arborist Employer Conference, bringing together professionals and industry experts to discuss the future of arboriculture. Held at our historic Manor House at the Enfield Campus, this event provided a unique platform for discussing sustainable urban forestry, workforce development, and the latest innovations in the field.
The conference featured keynotes from renowned experts, including Kevin Martin from the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, who spoke about the growing role of arborists in addressing climate resilience and shaping greener urban spaces. Other industry leaders shared insights on essential topics like carbon offsetting through tree selection, safety standards in arborist training and future advancements in arboriculture.
Highlights from the Conference
Workforce Development: One of the key focuses of the conference was on addressing the skills gap in arboriculture. With the new L2 Arborist Apprenticeship training standard now available, professionals have a clearer pathway to upskill. Plans for L4 and L6 apprenticeships are also in the works, ensuring that those interested in arboriculture have a progression route. In addition, short courses and certifications were highlighted as valuable options for students and professionals looking to enter or advance in this exciting field.
Sustainability in Arboriculture: Sustainable practices were another major topic of the day. Presenters discussed how carefully selecting and planting trees can reduce carbon emissions and improve urban landscapes. Ideas were shared on expanding urban tree canopies and promoting biodiversity, helping cities become more resilient and environmentally friendly.
Peter Brammall, Principal at Capel Manor College, expressed pride in the event’s success, stating;
“We are thrilled with the level of engagement and collaboration at this year’s conference. The arboriculture industry is at a pivotal moment, and it is inspiring to see so many employers committed to innovation, safety and sustainability. Our collective efforts will not only strengthen the industry but also contribute to healthier, greener communities.”
Attendees also had the opportunity to connect with one another, explore displays of state-of-the-art equipment and learn about the latest tools and techniques used in the field. The conference highlighted just how crucial arborists are in managing and protecting urban green spaces, helping combat climate change and fostering healthier ecosystems.
For anyone interested in a career that combines environmental impact, science and hands-on skills, arboriculture offers an incredible pathway – and Capel Manor College is here to support you at every step.
