The Maintenance Operative (Level 1)

Course overview

This course provides learners with the skills and knowledge required to work to professional standards within the horticulture industry as a grounds maintenance operative.

It is designed to develop the practical competencies and workplace awareness needed to operate efficiently within a professional grounds maintenance environment. Students will gain hands-on experience working across the grounds of Capel Manor College, guided by tutors with extensive industry experience.

The course covers a range of seasonal horticultural tasks, the safe and effective use of professional machinery, and the maintenance and care of planted areas. All practical activities are supported by the health and safety practices and industry standards expected within the horticulture sector.

There are no formal entry requirements for The Maintenance Gardener (Level 1) course. You do not need previous experience, just a willingness to learn. You may be asked to attend an interview to explore your interests, experience and ambitions. You must be aged 19 and over to enrol on this course.

Working in Industry as Grounds Maintenance, further study on The Professional Gardener or RHS Certificate in Practical Horticulture (Level 2).

If you are aged 19 or over on the day your course starts, you may be entitled to help with tuition fees subject to criteria. If you receive employment benefits, have a low income, or are studying towards your first substantial qualification, you may be entitled to free tuition. To qualify for this discount, you must already be studying another course at Capel Manor College, and be adding this course to your existing programme.
