Course overview
This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to support wildlife and enhance biodiversity within a garden environment. It introduces key ecological principles and horticultural practices that contribute to the establishment and long-term maintenance of resilient ecosystems and diverse habitats capable of supporting a wide range of insects and animals.
Students will examine horticultural techniques that promote soil health, explore plant selection strategies that benefit a broad spectrum of fauna, and consider ecologically responsible approaches to managing plant and animal “pests.” The course will also investigate a range of cultivation and garden management systems informed by regenerative and sustainable principles.
Designed for those who wish to develop gardens that function as ecologically rich environments, this course provides a foundation for creating and managing gardens that actively support wildlife and biodiversity

There are no formal entry requirements. You do not need previous experience, just a willingness to learn. You may be asked to attend an interview to explore your interests, experience and ambitions. You must be aged 19 and over to enrol on this course.
You can go on to study The Professional Gardener (Level 2), RHS Certificate in Practical Horticulture (Level 2), or volunteering opportunities in gardens and land based projects.
This course is part-funded by the ESFA (Education and Skills Funding Agency) or Greater London Authority (GLA) for those that are eligible.
If you are aged 19 or over on the day your course starts, you may be entitled to help with tuition fees subject to criteria. If you receive employment benefits, have a low income, or are studying towards your first substantial qualification, you may be entitled to free tuition.
