Capel Manor College Expands T Level Opportunities in Animal Care and Management

Following success with the introduction of the Animal Care and Management – Occupational Specialism: Animal Management and Behaviour (T Level) course at Capel Manor College’s Mottingham Campus, the College will be expanding this course offering to its Crystal Palace Park, Enfield and Gunnersbury Park campuses from September 2027.

The introduction of additional T Level courses London reflects Capel Manor College’s commitment to increasing the opportunities available to school leavers across London.

What are T Levels?

T Levels are two-year technical qualifications for students aged 16 to 19, designed as a valuable alternative to traditional A Levels and equivalent in size to three A Levels. Developed in collaboration with employers, they provide a combination of technical knowledge, practical learning and experience in the workplace.

Each T Level is made up of three main elements:

  • Technical qualification: Approximately 80% of the programme, involving classroom-based learning covering the core knowledge, concepts and specialist skills required for the chosen industry.
  • Industry placement: At least 315 hours (45 days) working with an employer, giving students the opportunity to put their learning into practice and experience a real working environment.
  • English, maths and digital skills: These important transferable skills are incorporated into the programme to help prepare students for the workplace and future progression.

This combination means students develop both the theoretical understanding and practical confidence needed to take their next steps into the animal care and management sector.

Developing the next generation of animal care professionals

Capel Manor College’s animal care and management T Level with the occupational specialism in animal management and behaviour, is designed to give students a broad understanding of the sector and the responsibilities involved in working with animals.

Students explore important topics including animal care and welfare, behaviour, sustainability, biosecurity and the responsibilities associated with employment in the industry. This provides a strong foundation for understanding the professional standards and specialist knowledge required across a range of animal-related careers.

The qualification can support progression towards careers such as zookeeper, animal care worker, dog handler and horse riding instructor, as well as further specialist training and higher-level study.

The industry placement is a particularly important part of the programme. By spending time with employers, students can gain valuable insight into the day-to-day demands of the sector, develop workplace skills and begin building professional connections.
