An Evening in Nature
Capel Manor College and Enfield Council were delighted to welcome visitors to the Enfield Beaver Site in Archers Wood for the first-ever public tours of this successful conservation project.
The first tour, held in October, provided a unique opportunity for participants to learn about the incredible work being done to reintroduce and support beavers in London after a 400-year absence. The sold-out tours offered attendees a chance to observe the resident beaver family at dusk, their most active time of day. Visitors embarked on a 20-minute walk from Forty Hall Farm to the six-hectare enclosure, guided by experts from Capel Manor College and Enfield Council. Along the way, guests learned about the history of the project, beavers’ behaviours and their crucial role in enhancing local biodiversity and managing flood risks.
Guests braved the autumn chill, donning wellies and torches to navigate the woodland paths. For many, it was a rare and unforgettable encounter with these industrious animals, made even more special by the presence of four recently born kits (baby beavers!).
A Conservation Milestone
The Enfield Beaver Project, launched in 2022, is the first reintroduction of beavers to London in over four centuries. This innovative initiative has already made a significant impact on the local ecosystem. The beavers have created sponge-like wetlands that support a diverse range of wildlife while naturally slowing water flow to reduce flood risks.
Meg Wilson, Animal Collection Manager at Capel Manor College, highlighted the importance of sharing this success with the public:
“It was wonderful to see so many people engage with the project and witness first-hand the positive impact the beavers are having on the environment. These tours demonstrate the power of conservation in action and bring our work to life for the community.”
Celebrating Community Support
The event was not only a celebration of the beavers’ progress but also of the collaboration and support that has made the project possible. With funding from the Mayor of London through the Rewild London Fund, the project continues to thrive. The birth of four kits earlier this year is a testament to the success of the enclosure and the dedication of the teams involved.
Looking Ahead
With the tour such a success, we are hopeful to run many more in the coming year as we expand this project into its next phase. Keep an eye on our news page and social media channels for exciting updates on the project, and your opportunity to visit the site for yourself! We look forward to sharing more of the incredible work being done to rewild London and support these remarkable animals.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this memorable event—we hope to welcome you back soon!
