New Shade Garden Opens at Regent’s Park Campus
Students at Capel Manor College’s Regent’s Park Campus have unveiled a beautiful new shade garden, showcasing the results of two years of immersive study and practical training.
Created by students on the City and Guilds Professional Gardener Diploma, the garden was designed as a space for reflection, learning and connection with nature. It brings together inclusive design, sustainable planting, and a thoughtful understanding of how people and plants interact.
With a focus on shade-loving species and the principle of placing the right plant in the right place, the students created a garden that is not only visually striking but also ecologically sensitive. Their work highlights the power of collaborative learning and the value of practical experience in real-world settings.
The official opening took place on Tuesday 20 May and welcomed staff, students, alumni and friends of the College, alongside colleagues from The Royal Parks and the wider horticultural community. Guests were invited to explore the garden, enjoy refreshments and share ideas for its future using plant-shaped feedback cards.
The event was also an opportunity to thank the many supporters who have contributed to the students’ development, from tutors and mentors to visiting professionals who have generously shared their expertise.
Sophie Guinness, Head of Garden Design at Capel Manor College said:
“This garden represents the best of our students’ talents and teamwork. It is more than just a garden; it is a growing legacy and a real example of their learning in action.”
Like any good garden, this one will continue to grow and evolve. Future student groups and tutors will be able to build on the foundations laid this year, shaping the space further and embedding it into the curriculum. It stands as a lasting reminder of what can be achieved when education, creativity and care for the environment come together.
