Course overview

This courses covers everything you need to know to become self-employed, from helping you to get started to guiding you in creating a comprehensive business plan for bank submissions, and loan or grant applications.

This part-time course will give you an understanding of a business start-up’s initial processes, requirements and knowledge of the first steps in creating a business start-up. We will also help you understand the marketing, legal and financial requirements, as well as how to write a business plan.

If you are already studying a land-based course with us and plan to become self-employed and/or start your own business, then this course is ideal to study alongside your land-based course.

The ability to effectively read and write in English, basic numeracy skills, and digital skills as the course is presented and completed using computers.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress on to our BTEC First Diploma in Business (Level 2) course.

This course is part-funded by the DfE (Department for Education) or Greater London Authority (GLA) for those that are eligible.

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 at the start of the course, your tuition, exams and materials fees will be paid for you in full as long as you meet some basic criteria for UK residence (more information can be found on our Fees and Funding page).

If you are aged 19 or over on the day your course starts, you may be entitled to help with tuition fees subject to criteria. If you receive employment benefits, have a low income, or are studying towards your first substantial qualification, you may be entitled to free tuition. For some of our courses, we offer a discount for current students. If this is the case, you will see the reduced fee when you select your chosen course campus and start date. To qualify for this discount, you must already be studying another course at Capel Manor College, and be adding this course to your existing programme.
