Useful Information

Tips on applying and securing your place

You can apply to study at Capel Manor College online. It is a simple process and we advise you to apply as early as possible to secure your place.

Applicants for selected full-time courses and apprenticeships will be invited to an interview. Following your interview we will normally offer you a place on the right course for you, depending on your qualifications or predicted grades.

You will be invited to join an enrolment session to confirm your place at the College.

The amount you pay to study will depend upon your personal circumstances and the course you are enrolling on to. If you are aged 16 to 18 years old your course is free. If you are aged 19 and over, the full cost of your course will include the tuition fee, examination/registration fee and materials fee where applicable. You can apply for financial help to cover fees if you meet specific criteria, which can be found here.

Is there an application deadline for courses?

We encourage everyone to submit their application as quickly as possible. The sooner you apply, the sooner we can confirm your place.

When can I expect to hear about my application?

Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an email from the Admissions team acknowledging receipt within five working days.

If you have applied for a full-time course you will be offered a conditional place at Capel Manor College at the same time as application acknowledgement, within five working days.

If you have applied for a part-time course, you will receive a decision on your application within 10 working days.

If you have not heard back within these timeframes please check your junk or spam email folder. Should you need to follow up with the Admissions team, you can do so via live chat, contact form on our website, or telephone on 01992 707029. You will be asked to verify your identity prior to discussing your application.

Do I need to tell you about my GCSE results?

Your place on some courses at the College depends on the outcome of your GCSE results. As soon as you know your grades, please let us know.

If you have already received a conditional or unconditional offer from us and are concerned about your GCSE grades - please do not worry; we can still offer you a place to study with us. Depending on your results, we will always help select the right course for you.

When and how do I enrol on my course?

The College holds enrolment sessions which you must attend in order to enrol and secure your place on your chosen course. You will receive an email or letter, usually three to four weeks before the start of your course, informing you when to come to the College and enrol.

It is essential that you attend the enrolment session in person and bring with you all the documentation requested in your enrolment email or letter. This will enable us to determine if you need to pay a course fee, confirm the qualifications you have achieved and give you the opportunity to sign your Learning Agreement and obtain your student ID card. You must be fully enrolled in order to start your course or attend the College.

If you are leaving school soon, it is time to start thinking about your next steps. One of the biggest decisions you need to make is whether to stay on at school and go into sixth form or go to college. Vocational qualifications at colleges can offer a fast track to employment or university as they allow learners to demonstrate they are better prepared for the workplace or higher study.

As a student at Capel Manor College you will experience a different learning environment to that experienced at a school's sixth form. You will be immersed in a hands-on, creative and practical outdoor learning environment, with exceptional, industry-experienced tutors who are experts in their fields and will help you gain renowned qualifications valued by land-based employers across the world. As part of your studies, you have the unique opportunity to obtain real-world experience and help take care of the College’s estates, gardens, farms, zoos and commercial businesses.

Many of our students complete an industry placement while studying with us. They are a mandatory part of our Level 3 study programmes designed to give you the opportunity to develop practical, technical, and professional skills. They focus on meaningful training in the workplace to develop and hone key knowledge, skills and behaviours required for industry. An industry placement will make a significant difference to your future employment prospects and give you a competitive advantage in gaining skilled employment in the future.

What are the benefits of completing an industry placement?

  • To build and develop technical skills, increasing your competence and ability to progress into skilled employment
  • An industry placement will help you to develop highly desirable professional behaviour and key skills such as communication, teamwork and problem solving
  • You will gain a deeper understanding of how to run a business and general commercial principles
  • An industry placement is a great opportunity for personal development, encouraging self-reliance and building self-confidence
  • You will reflect on your experiences to identify your strengths and preferences for future career options
  • By completing an industry placement you will build a valuable working relationship with an employer, resulting in a more meaningful reference to use for future job applications

Our dedicated industry placement coordinator will help and support you during your industry placement to make sure all parties are getting the most out of the experience. Your tutor will also support you to complete your placement and all necessary paperwork.

Is there any financial help available to support me on my industry placement?

Yes, the College may be able to help with travel costs and any equipment or Personal Protective Equipment that may be required on placement. This will be considered on an individual basis.

I have a disability, what help will there be for me to complete my industry placement?

Capel Manor College is committed to supporting high-quality industry placements for all of our students. We establish great relationships with employers who promote inclusion and equality. We will discuss your individual circumstances and work with you to make sure your industry placement option meets your needs.

Achieving good English and Maths skills is essential to compete in today’s job market. They are also essential for studying other subjects as all courses require students to apply English and Maths skills in their work.

Since 2014, by law, all students aged 16 to 18 without at least a Level 4, or a grade C, in both English and Maths at GCSE must keep studying these subjects as part of their study programme.

In 2015 the policy was tightened so that students with a Level 3, or a grade D, at the age of 16 were required to re-sit the GCSE rather than an alternative qualification, such as functional skills.

Leaving education without a good level of English and Maths means that chances of finding employment are lower, students are likely to earn less, and opportunities for progression into further education, training or a job promotion are limited.

Capel Manor College deliver two types of qualifications to improve students’ English and Maths skills:

  • Functional skills (Maths and English)
  • GCSE (Maths and English)

Both of these qualifications are recognised by employers and other training providers.

When you enrol at Capel Manor College, we ask for copies of your exam certificates if you have already taken formal exams. The grade you achieved determines which qualification and level you will be enrolled on at the College.

If you have not taken a formal qualification, you will sit an English and Maths assessment at enrolment to see what level you are working at and what level you should be enrolled on.
