Parental Support

We recognise that as a parent or carer, you play a vital role in supporting your child as they make important decisions about their education and future. At Capel Manor College, we are dedicated to providing an exceptional experience for your child and are committed to working with you to help them achieve their goals and succeed.

The environment at a college is generally more ‘adult’ compared to a school, and students are expected to take more responsibility for themselves and their learning.

Whilst studying with us, your child will be encouraged to develop their independent and employability skills. Key to this is the need to attend all classes. Students make better progress if they are in class and actively learning.

All elements of the programme of study are important to your child’s future success, and we ask for your support in ensuring they attend and work hard for all classes. This includes their vocational lessons, tutorial, English and maths classes, and any other enrichment activity or work experience they are involved in.

We expect all students to arrive well prepared for lessons and ask that you encourage this. Please ensure that your child arrives on time, is appropriately dressed (wearing the ID badge which we supply) and is ready to study and take pride in their full programme of studies. We want our students to show respectful behaviour to both fellow students and staff as we prepare them for the world of work.

We would like to remind you that your child should not take holidays in term time where avoidable.

Meetings bringing together the student, parents/carers, teaching and support staff

If your child is going to be late or absent due to illness, you should either:

Send an email directly to their teacher
Phone the College on 0303 003 1234, where you can leave a message that will then be emailed to their teacher

If your child is absent and the College has not received an email or call from you, we will text to inform you. If you receive a text and want to talk to someone from the College, or have any concerns, you can contact us by:

Students are expected to behave in a professional and respectful manner whilst attending the College. This ensures all of our students feel safe and can learn in a supportive and respectful environment.

For students who require additional support, the student’s teacher, or one of Capel Manor College’s support team may work with students.

Depending on the situation in relation to behaviour, the College Learner Disciplinary Policy is in place to respond when a student’s behaviour does not meet expected standards. This includes any incidents of bullying or harassment or if a student’s attendance, punctuality or academic progress falls below expected levels.

Based on a student’s behaviour, a Behaviour Contract may be agreed with the student. Where necessary parents/carers may be required to be involved in the meetings. Students may be placed on a Stage 1, 2 or 3, as part of the disciplinary process depending on the severity of their behaviour. Students may move through each of the above support/disciplinary stages or be moved directly onto the appropriate stage for the behaviour that needs to be addressed.

For very serious behaviours that do not meet the College standards, it may be necessary to move directly to Stage 3 and complete an investigation to determine what action is required which may include temporary exclusion, or possible permanent exclusion from the College.
