Introduction to Organic Gardening (Level 1)

Course overview

This practical based course will give you an introduction into organic horticulture, providing you with the knowledge of the principles and values of organic horticulture and the opportunity to gain the practical skills.

This will enable you to increase your enjoyment when working in your own allotment or garden, enhance your confidence when considering employment in organic horticulture, or voluntary work.

The course will be based at both our Forty Hall Farm, our organic farm and vinyard and on our Enfield campus.

  • Soil health, conditioning and composting
  • The establishment and maintenance of plants in organic systems
  • Biodiversity
  • Management of pets and diseases
  • Safe use of tools, equipment and machinery
  • Health and safety
Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course. You do not need previous experience, just a willingness to learn and enthusiasm for organic gardening. You may be asked to attend an interview to explore your interests, experience and ambitions.

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to our horticulture courses at Level 2, or take a garden design course. You will also be prepared for voluntary work in organic gardens, charities and community gardens.
