Learning Support

The School of Learning Support offers Key Skills, Functional Skills, Employability Skills, Basic Skills, Business Studies, advice, guidance, mentoring, counselling and support to all full and part-time students at all levels at the College. Although we don’t offer an ESOL programme, we do assist students for whom English is a second language through language support on their course. All apprentices and students who are 16-18 years old will study Functional or Key Skills at the level they need. Students over 19 are also encouraged to refresh and accredit their Functional Skills alongside vocational study.

The Heaven Academy
(HORTICULTURE ENVIRONMENT ANIMAL CARE VOCATIONAL ENHANCEMENT)
This initiative was launched in 2002 to provide an opportunity for 14-16 year olds to enhance their GCSE studies, by gaining vocational qualifications and experience in horticulture, animal care and environmental studies. We have a growing number of partner schools across London in the project, whose pupils benefit from our exceptional practical facilities and specialist staff.

School Links Programmes
The School of Learning Support also offers individualised programmes for schools. These are aimed at pupils aged
14 and above who may have identified learning difficulties and disabilities or who have disengaged with education.
The 30-week long programmes lead to the accreditation of an award at Entry Level 3. School links programmes
aiming for Level 1 qualifications are also available for groups of students as a complement to GCSE study.

Access to FE Programmes
These are 3 day a week entry level programmes for 16- 21 year olds who need to gain qualifications to enable
them to progress on to Level 1 courses. The programmes focus on the acquisition of basic skills and work skills through improvement of literacy, numeracy, IT, social and communication skills, as well as entry level qualifications in landbased studies such as horticulture, animal care and countryside management. Contact the Learning Support team to discuss entry requirements.

Discrete Provision
Short courses at Entry Level and Level 1 in gardening skills may be designed on request. For further details email enquiries@capel.ac.uk with the subject ‘Learning Support’.

School Visits
Nursery, primary and secondary schools may bring their pupils to the Enfield campus and gardens for a one-off
visit. Programmes are tailored according to children’s age and school curricula. For further information, please visit www.capel.ac.uk/schools

Other Activities
We run customised one-year and tailored programmes in partnership with a range of primary and secondary schools, and link with Enfield’s Education Business Partnership in contributing to the successful STAR (Skills, Training and Remotivation)
project for 14 and 15 year olds.

The School of Learning Support also offers a programme of lunchtime sports and leisure activities.
