Tuition Fees

Individual course tuition fees are given in the course listings pages under the relevant subject areas in this prospectus.

If you are applying for a Further Education course you will not have to pay tuition fees for government-funded courses if:

  • you are under 19 on 31 August 2012;

  • you are over 19, and receive ‘active’ state benefits:
    • income and contribution based Job Seeker’s Allowance;
    • work-related Employment and Support Allowance.

  • you are an asylum seeker in receipt of active benefit.

Please note: when you enrol you must bring current documents confirming evidence of your ‘active’ benefit.

  • you are over 19, a UK citizen living in England or Wales and do not have a full level 2 qualification (5 GCSEs at grades A-C, Level 2 Diploma or equivalent) and are enrolling on a level 1 or full level 2 course.
  • you are aged between 19-25, a UK citizen living in England or Wales and enrolling on your first full level 3 qualification.

Please note: that this list is subject to annual revision and is given only as a guideline.

Government funding entitlement reductions mean that we can no longer offer an automatic fee waiver if you receive
Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, contribution based Employment and Support Allowance, Disability Allowance or Incapacity Benefit or if you are the unwaged dependant of someone on benefit whether ‘active’ on ‘inactive’. If you are unable to pay the full tuition fees the college may be able to offer some support from our Learner Support Fund, but this will depend on individual cases of hardship. Please contact the Admissions team or the Pastoral Care team if you wish to be considered for a discretionary discount.

Registration and Examination Fees
Major registration fees for all Further Education students under 19 on 31 August 2012 are paid by the College. All students aged 19 and over (including those exempt from tuition fees) are required to pay registration fees.
Registration fees are payable in full at enrolment and may be subject to change by the awarding bodies.

EU Students
Students from European Union member states pay tuition fees as charged to UK residents. However, please note that tuition fee waivers do not apply to EU students and EU students cannot apply for bursaries from the College’s discretionary Learner Support Fund.

Overseas Students
Overseas students are those who have not been normally resident in the UK or another EU country for the three years prior to the start of the course. The College is licensed by the Home Office to sponsor visa applications from eligible students. Please note that renewed student visas do not meet the criteria of ‘normally resident’. Proof of funding for living expenses as well as course expenses needs to be provided. There is an annually agreed tuition fee for overseas students. For the year 2012- 2013 this will be £8,989. Please note that tuition fee waivers do not apply to overseas students and overseas students cannot apply for bursaries from the College’s discretionary Learner Support Fund.

Where students have pressing cash-flow problems, the College may agree to accept full-time tuition fees in two equal instalments. The Admissions team can provide further information.

Closure of Classes
The College reserves the right to cancel any course in the unlikely event of low recruitment or retention. If a suitable alternative course cannot be identified, the deposit of £40 paid will be refunded.

Refunds
The £40 deposit on registration fees for adults is not normally returnable. It will however be refunded should your chosen course not run, or should any change to its timing, day of the week or location be inconvenient for an individual.

Registration fees and tuition fees paid at enrolment are not refundable.

Course and Fee Changes
Significant changes to vocational courses and course titles for all students over 16 were introduced in 2010- 2011 and again in 2011-12. Further change is likely in funding for Further Education adult students. Known changes to tuition fees for 19+ students have been included in this prospectus and on the College’s website www.capel.ac.uk. Further fee increases (reflecting withdrawal in whole or part of a national contribution) may be introduced when the impact of changes in government support and priorities is known. Changes will be made on the website as details become available.

Help with finances

Grants and Loans
The College administers Learner Support Funds provided by the government to support Further Education students'
financial needs. This can help to pay for accommodation, travel, books, equipment and child care.

The College is a member of EGAS, an organisation which helps to provide grants for students in need. The Admissions team or the Pastoral Care team can provide further information and application forms for all support funds.

Career Development Loans
Career Development Loans may also be available for those students who have received Local Education Authority support in the past. For detailed advice on Career Development Loans follow the Education and Learning link on www.direct.gov.uk

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
EMA is no longer available for students in England. Government ministers hope to increase colleges’ Learner Support Funds to meet needs for most pressing cases of hardship. (See Grants and Loans item on this page.)

Adult Learner Grants (ALG)
ALG is a means tested allowance of up to £30 per week available to adults resident in England studying full-time for
a first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification. Further details are available from the Admissions Team or the Pastoral Care team and www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning

Equal Opportunities
We believe in, and have a commitment to, implementing equality of opportunity and freedom from discrimination for staff, students and other visitors, regardless of gender, race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age, marital status and responsibility for dependants. We are committed to the elimination of unlawful and unfair discrimination. In making this commitment, the College extends it to all those associated with the organisation, and to protection as outlined in our policy statements and procedures. Capel Manor College is committed to ensuring that disabled people, including those with learning difficulties, are treated fairly. All reasonable adjustments to provision will be made to ensure that disabled students and other disabled people are not substantially disadvantaged. If you require any assistance with making an application or attending an interview, please contact the School of Student Services.
