Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies
(Countryside and Environment)
This one year course is designed to give students Level 1 knowledge and the opportunity to acquire the practical skills in the chosen subject.
The Course
The Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies offers a specialist qualification that focuses on particular aspects of employment within the land based sector. The Level 1 Diploma is a qualification which can extend the study and provide vocational emphasis for learners in their programme of study.
The purpose of the qualification is to provide a centre-based qualification as a starting point for people entering both education and employment in the sector.
The qualification provides a sound knowledge and skills base which will allow progression to further learning or qualifications, or into employment opportunities.
Course Content
This is an excellent foundation in the principles of countryside management work.
A range of study methods is used including lectures, tutorials and practical work in the College and surrounding estates.
Continuous assessment includes assignments, written and practical tests, commercial experience and work experience.Entry Requirements
The course is designed for 16-19 year olds. Prospective students should have a minimum of Entry 3 maths and English or GCSEs at grades E-F. Students should have a good general education and a real interest in the chosen subject. Individual interviews can be arranged with a course tutor and to view college facilities.
Training and Assessment Methods
Training will have an emphasis on practical skills with underpinning knowledge. There will be visits to a variety of woodland and other countryside sites.
Venue and Facilities
The course will take place at Capel Manor’s Crystal Palace Park centre. Capel Manor has a good range of indoor and outdoor practical facilities to support all the units. Some of the work will take place off site at local farms or with other organisations e.g. local ranger services, RSPB or London Wildlife Trust.
Qualifications Gained
Success on this course leads to the nationally recognised award of a Level 1 Land Based diploma.
Progression
Students gaining the Level 1 Land Based Diploma may progress to, a level 2 Diploma in arboriculture or environment, thus enhancing their career prospects.
Working in the Arboricultural Industry
Over the past 10 years the opportunities for working in the countryside industry have increased considerably. Advances in health and safety legislation have meant that employers require skilled operatives who have underpinning knowledge of the industry. There is currently a demand for staff with practical skills and many of our students progress into employment - or further training. There are opportunities for supervisors and managers enabling good career progression.
