Green HEART for Parents and Carers
Level 2 Certificate in Gardening 0062-02
Capel Manor College has devised a ‘hands on’ part time 36 week programme (one day per week) starting September and finishing in term time July. It is aimed at parents and carers who have children of school age and runs from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm, giving time to drop-off and pick-up children. The course offers theory, practical knowledge and hands on experience. You do not have to be a parent or carer to attend this course.
An ideal programme for avid amateurs and those keen to progress into or those new to professional horticulture. The course offers theory, practical knowledge and hands on experience.
The Course
This nationally recognised Gardening Scheme consists of one certificate: The Level 2 Certificate in Gardening (Practical) (0062-02). The awarding body City & Guilds validates the scheme.
Course Content
The topic areas covered over the year of study include:
- Unit 3 Trees, shrubs and hedges
- Unit 4 Beds and borders
- Unit 8 Ponds and water features
- Unit 12 Growing vegetables and salads
- Unit 15 Practical gardening tasks

On completion of the year programme you will have the opportunity of achieving:
The Level 2 Certificate in Gardening (0062-02).
This course offers progression to Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture (Organics), the RHS Certificate in Horticulture, NVQ2 Amenity Horticulture (Landscaping), City & Guilds Certificate in Gardening ‘Allotment Gardener’ and entry on to a comprehensive range of garden design programmes (although the latter requires the attendance of an 8 week design access programme).Entry Requirements
All students should have a willingness to learn and be assessed on new skills and experiences in horticulture.
Normal entry requirements are:
- Completion of a Level 1 horticulture programme
- Minimum of 4 GCSEs
However, other relevant qualifications of equivalent standard and/or practical experience in horticulture will be considered.
Assessment
The Level 2 Certificate in Gardening (0062-02)
Four end of unit exams covering the course content section of this leaflet. Each exam is 1½ hours long comprising of 18 short answer questions. (Note: These exams are spaced throughout the course). To pass unit 15 a satisfactory level must be achieved on 12 practicals, 3 from each of the theory units 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Additional Costs
Safety boots and secateurs are required for the programme.
