NPTC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Horticulture
(Sustainable & Organic Horticulture)
The course aims to provide learners with the knowledge and practical skill to understand the complexities of the organic movement. To develop an awareness of a more organic, sustainable and holistic way of life within a range of situations and horticultural careers.
The Course
The course runs one year from September to July. A wide range of topics are covered in sessions supported with handouts and practical experience within the gardens. Visits to organic sites are arranged during the year. Students attending the course need to allow 2 hours per week for coursework (to be completed at home)
Course Content
The course consists of TWO mandatory units set by the awarding body and FOUR optional units chosen by Capel Manor as follows:
Mandatory Units (set by the awarding body)
Unit 201 Understand the Basic Principles of Plant Science
Unit 202 Understand the Basic Principles of Soil Science
Optional Units (chosen by Capel Manor)
Unit 216 Contribute to Fruit Production by Organic Methods
Unit 227 Understand the Principles of Organic Horticulture
Unit 228 Understand the Principles of Sustainable Horticulture
Unit 245 Contribute to Vegetable Production by Organic Means
Assessment
Each unit is assessed through written assignments and practical assessments set by the awarding body. Students much achieve a minimum of a pass in all SIX of the above units.
All units and the final award are assessed at a pass, credit and distinction grade.
Qualifications Gained
Success on this course leads to the NPTC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Horticulture.
Entry Requirements
Students will normally have 4 GCSEs at D to G grade or equivalent and have achieved a satisfactory standard in the literacy and numeracy tests set at the start of the course.
Industry experience may be taken into consideration, where students do not have the necessary qualifications subject to interview.
Course Costs
Apart from the course and registration/exam fees, students need to budget for safety boots, secateurs, protective clothing for practical work, a course file and writing materials as well as travel costs, refreshments and fees towards course trips.

Progression
Students completing this course often progress onto other part time and full time courses at level 3, including Garden Design and BTEC National Certificate and Diploma courses.

Additional Support
Students are supported in their studies through regular tutorials and access to study skills tutors where required. There is also access to a specialist library and use of computers.
Fees
Unless stated otherwise, students aged 16-18 are exempt from tuition and registration fees
