NPTC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Horticulture
(Hard Landscape and Garden Construction)

This is a one year course suitable for school leavers, avid amateurs and adults new to the landscape industry and it aims to equip students with the knowledge of practical skills and the confidence required of the hard landscape gardener.

The Course
The course runs for 33 weeks from September to July. Students attend for one day each week, from 9.00am to 4.00pm. A wide range of topics and lectures are supported with slides and videos, as well as many practical sessions.

Prospective students should note that the course is designed as an introduction to hard landscaping skills and knowledge and may not be suitable for students who already have skills in hard landscape construction.

Course Content
The course consists of TWO mandatory units set by the awarding body and
THREE optional units chosen by Capel Manor as follows:
Mandatory Units (set by the awarding body)
Unit 202 Understand the Basic Principles of Soil Science
Unit 203 Setting Out from a Plan

Optional Units (chosen by Capel Manor)
Unit 206 Construct and Maintain Garden Fences
Unit 208 Construct Garden Walls
Unit 209 Construct Landscape Foundations and Surfaces

There will be a strong emphasis of health and safety throughout all the course units

Assessment
Each unit is assessed through written assignments and practical assessments set by the awarding body. Students must achieve a minimum of a pass in all FIVE of the above units.

All units and the final award are assessed at a pass, credit and distinction grade.

Qualifications Gained
Success on this course leads to the award of a NPTC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Horticulture.

Entry Requirements
You are welcome to visit the College to discuss and identify with the course tutor a study programme which will help towards your intended career. All students are assessed on an individual basis, to ensure they have adequate levels of numeracy and literacy normally to a level 1 standard or four GCSEs at D-G grade. In addition it is desirable for students to be able to use I.T. to enable them to word process their written assignments.
However, other relevant qualifications of equivalent standard and/or practical experience in horticulture will also be considered.

Additional Costs
Students will require steel toecap footwear, overalls, wet weather clothing and writing materials. Many students like to keep a photographic record of their time at Capel Manor and students should budget for these costs in addition to travelling and living expenses when making course decisions.

Venue
This course takes place at Capel Manor’s main site in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield, where the 30 acres estate, laid out in a wide range of gardening styles, provides an excellent teaching area for plants and landscaping materials.

The college has a large purpose built landscape unit containing classrooms and practical facilities.

Progression
Students completing this course often progress onto other part time and full time courses at level 3, including Garden Design and BTEC National Certificate and Diploma courses.

Additional Support
Students are supported in their studies through regular tutorials and access to study skills tutors where required. There is also access to a specialist library and use of computers.

Fees
Unless stated otherwise, students aged 16-18 are exempt from tuition and registration fees
