Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills (7573-01)
Capel Manor College has devised a ‘hands on’ part time 33 week programme (one day per week 9.00am – 4.00pm) starting September and finishing in term time July. The course offers theory, practical knowledge and hands on experience
The Course
This nationally recognised programme consists of one City & Guilds/NPTC Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills (7573). The awarding body City & Guilds validates the scheme. It’s aimed at those looking for a qualification in fundamental horticulture skills.
Course Content
The topic areas covered over the 33 weeks of study include:
- Growing trees, shrubs and roses (selection, establishment, care and maintenance)
- Growing flowers (herbaceous and annual plants, care and maintenance)
- The lawn (selection, establishment, care and maintenance)
- Propagating plants (vegetatively and from seed)
- Use of a range of tools, equipment and machinery
- Health and safety
- Plant Identification
Qualifications Gained
On completion of this programme you will have the opportunity of achieving: City & Guilds/NPTC Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills (7573).
Entry Requirements
A willingness to learn new skills, to undertake practical tasks and/or to progress into Horticulture as a career or as a volunteer.
Assessment
For the Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills candidates must complete the 4 core units:
001 Prepare ground for seeding or planting
002 Plant container grown subjects
003 Apply organic mulch to a border
004 Water a bed or border
and 4 of the optional units
Progression
Successful completion of the City & Guilds/NPTC Level 1 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills (7573) offers progression to City & Guilds/ NPTC 0220 Level 2 Organic Horticulture, City & Guilds/NPTC 0220 Level 2 Turf Care and City & Guilds/NPTC 0220 Level 2 Hard Landscape, RHS Level 2 Certificate in Horticulture, and for those employed Apprenticeship programmes and National Vocational Qualifications. We also have a range of full-time provision; BTEC First Diploma in Horticulture and a suite of BTEC Nationals.
