Practical Gardener
(Day)
Capel Manor College has devised a ‘hands on’ part time 6 month programme (one day per week for 6 hours plus a series of Saturdays for 5 hours) starting January and finishing end of July.
An ideal programme for avid amateurs and keen professionals offering practical knowledge and hands on experience.
The Course
This nationally recognised Gardening Scheme consists of one certificate: Level 1 Certificate in Horticultural Skills (9352). NPTC (part of the City & Guilds group) validates the scheme.
Course Content
The topic areas covered over the 6 months of study include:
- Selection, establishment, care and maintenance of trees, shrubs and roses
- Herbaceous and annual plants, care and maintenance
- Selection, establishment, care and maintenance of the lawn
- Propagating plants (vegetatively and from seed)
Qualification Gained
On completion of this short programme you will have the opportunity of achieving:
Level 1 Certificate in Horticultural Skills (9352).
On completion of this course together with a minimum entry level 3 literacy/numeracy successful students can move onto the following courses:
- City & Guilds Organic Husbandry and Holistic Studies
- RHS Certificate in Horticulture
- NVQ2 Amenity Horticulture (Landscaping)
The College is also able to offer other topic areas under the City & Guilds Certificate in Gardening (0062) and entry on to the Foundation to Garden Design programme.
Entry Requirements
A willingness to learn new skills and experience in horticulture. The knowledge and understanding to undertake practical tasks.
Assessment
There will be a minimum of twelve practical tasks assessed plus a plant file project.
Progression
Successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Horticultural Skills (9352) will enable you to progress to C&G 0062 Certificate in Gardening, NVQ II Amenity Horticulture (if employed in horticulture).
