Being a Student

Accommodation
We have six study bedrooms available at Forty Hall Farm, which is within walking distance of our Enfield centre. At present the College has accommodation for an additional twenty mature students in rented flats and shared houses. (Students under 19 years old are not eligible for collegemanaged accommodation at Capel Manor.) Priority for college-managed accommodation is given to first year students. Contact the Admissions team for details.

Counselling
Counselling is available, by appointment, to all full-time and part-time students at all of our centres. It is provided by qualified therapeutic counsellors. Contacts with other agencies such as local mental health teams may also be made on behalf of students.

Careers Service
Careers advice and guidance is available from the College’s Careers Adviser along with assistance for Higher Education applications. The service is supported by Connexions for 16- 19 year-olds. The careers base has a collection of general and specialist information. Course tutors at all centres will also be able to give you help and advice on career routes. If you are unsure about which course is right for you, you can contact the Careers Adviser by email on careers@capel.ac.uk or the School of Student Services by email on susan.gorman@capel.ac.uk

The Library Service
We have a comprehensive collection of books, journals and reference materials to support our courses. In addition, students may make use of Capella, the College's virtual learning environment, which provides online access to course materials, the student intranet and the library catalogue, both in and out of college.

Refreshments

Barking & Dagenham College
Capel students have full access to the canteen facilities at Barking & Dagenham College’s main Rush Green campus.

Crystal Palace Park
Hot and cold drinks and food may be purchased from the park cafeteria. There are also vending machines in the College’s base in the Jubilee Stand and in The Croft building at the farm. The farm is open to the public for 300 days a year.

Enfield
The Terrace Restaurant is open Monday to Friday from 8:15am-4pm. During the summer months it is also open at weekends from 10am-5pm.

Gunnersbury Park
A range of fresh foods are delivered daily around midday. Hot and cold beverages and a range of snacks are available from the lobby vending machines.

Regent’s Park
Students may use the numerous restaurants and cafés in the park. Alternatively, there are vending machines in the centre, providing snacks and hot drinks.

The Gardens
Capel Manor Gardens and the walled garden at Gunnersbury Park are an integral part of the College and are used to provide practical experience for students. The gardens at Enfield are also open to the public. The many visitors provide a part of the unique atmosphere of the College.

Student Charter
We believe the best results are achieved from a partnership between the College and all those who use its services. The Students' Charter sets out what you can expect from the College and what we expect from you. A copy is given to all students at enrolment and copies are available to all from Reception at all centres, or from your course manager.

Student ID Cards
All students are issued with personal ID cards which are to be worn at all times on College sites for security reasons. ID cards (which include proximity readers) enable access to libraries and college facilities. They may also be used to obtain discounts.

Capel Manor Shop (Enfield)
The shop at reception in the Duchess of Devonshire Pavilion is open from 9:00am-5:00pm, weekdays and weekends, closed at the weekends between November and February. Students producing their ID card can claim a discount of 5% on books and 10% on stationery items. The Floristry Training Shop sells items for Floristry, Flower Arranging and Balloon Artistry and is a retail training shop for Floristry students.

Learning Support

Functional and Key Skills
Functional Skills are practical skills in English, Mathematics and Information Communication Technology, taught at all levels from Entry Level to Level 2 (GCSE equivalent). Each component is a qualification in its own right. Functional Skills are the skills that you need to have a successful career in any industry.

All full-time students aged between 16 and 18 years will study some areas of Functional Skills as an integral component of their vocational courses.

Apprentices may study Key or Functional Skills at the level they need to complete their Apprenticeship Framework. Students over 19 are also encouraged to refresh and accredit their skills alongside vocational study.

Work Experience
Most of our full-time courses include a period of work experience. We have an extensive database of approved placement providers in all our specialist areas. We also welcome proposals from students and employers for new placements in the UK and abroad. Our work experience mentor can assist you with finding work experience placements. Please email sally.standing@capel.ac.uk or visit the Careers and Work Experience office in room D13 in the Duchess of Devonshire building.

The Study Skills Centre
We offer advice, guidance and support to anyone applying to study at any college centre. If you are dyslexic or have any other learning difficulty or disability, or if you have difficulty with maths, writing or spelling, structuring an essay, completing an assignment or preparing for your examinations, the Study Skills Centre staff can support you.

Tutorial System
Personal tutors offer support and advice with your studies. The course manager may also be your personal tutor or you may have an additional personal tutor.

Library and ILT Resources
Open access ILT facilities are available in the Frances Perry Library in the Duchess of Devonshire Pavilion at the Enfield centre and in the Learning Resources Centres at Gunnersbury Park, Regent’s Park and Crystal Palace Park. All workstations have internet access. Wi-fi access is enabled at identified locations in all centres.

Enriching your college experience

We have an established programme of activities for students at our Enfield centre, and we are now expanding student activities to all our centres. All centres run the Jack Petchey Award Scheme where students can be nominated for achievement awards and receive a cash sum to be spent on something to benefit all the students. Activies include:

Relaxation
The College now has a newly-refurbished student common room, which opens daily at lunchtime for all students and features a full-sized pool table and competition-sized table football. There are also sofas to relax on and board games,
magazines and books.

Sports
Footballs, rugby balls and basketballs are all available for students to borrow while softball, Kwick cricket and volleyball games are played during the spring and summer terms. There are two full sized goals for football on the playing fields as well as a basketball net. The College runs a boys football team which has fixtures against local schools and colleges and plans to run a girls football team.

Arts and Crafts
Each week we host a jewellery and badge making class, while additional options such as card making and watercolour classes are held each term. A film club runs during the winter months showing short films.

Fundraising
Each year teams of students get involved in Children In Need and Sport Relief, devising ways of raising money for good causes.

Christmas Show
There is a Christmas Show put on by the students for the students which gives opportunities to students who would like to sing or dance.

Ad Hoc events
These include sign language classes, yoga, salsa and street dance.

Team Capel

Capel Manor College is a charity. Whilst the College is funded by the government and the course fees we collect, we still need to raise around three million pounds every year to enrich our service. The College benefits from practical work undertaken by its full-time and part-time students.

Team Capel can help make the College an even better place to study or visit through:

1. Volunteering - in the gardens, at the farm, working with animals or in the College’s administration and learning support services.

2. Mentoring - peer mentors from vocational areas help young students to adapt to college life, complete course work and develop independent skills. Mentors work closely with the Learning Support team. They receive one full day of training at the start of the year and attend termly workshop sessions.

Team Capel members extend their own and other students’ learning experience with the College. All new and returning
students are warmly invited to apply to join Team Capel.
