Working with animals is a hugely rewarding career choice and there are a large variety of careers choices in animal management, welfare and veterinary sciences. Being qualified to degree level increases the options available to you and your earning potential. If it has been sometime since you have studied, this qualification can really give you the confidence and study skills to be able to take on a full degree.
Our Access to HE Animal Science and Welfare Diploma is designed to give you the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to study for a degree in animal management and science. Your course will develop:
- your understanding of animal health and welfare
- your practical animal skills including health checks, management plans and dispensing medication
- scientific research skills and undertake an investigative research project
- practical laboratory skills in biochemistry and microbiology
- your business management skills.
It will also enable you to refresh your literacy, numeracy, computer and science knowledge and skills, providing you with the necessary research skills and subject-specific grounding to succeed in your chosen land-based degree at university.
You can choose to study full-time for a year, with a commitment of two days study at College and one day a week self-directed study or choose the more flexible part-time route over two years at College with a commitment of one day a week including weekend study where available.
There are no formal qualifications required but ideally you will have relevant experience gained in a professional working environment and related qualifications. Although a desire and enthusiasm for life-long learning and ability to study independently are equally as important.
You will need a good standard of literacy and numeracy and we will ask you to take an English and maths assessment to make sure you are working at the right level plus we will invite you to come and meet us so together we can discuss and ensure this is the right course for you.
What next after your course?
Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress to:
- Higher Education, to study for a degree in a wide variety of land-based subjects
- employment in a range of animal management and science careers
- from 2017 you will be able to progress to our animal related Foundation Degree at Capel.
